Word is, it was a factor. Bama was pushing for us and they pointed to THAT

I was at that game and VT fans represented VERY well, despite the school and alumni base being much farther away than Bama's.

I do feel guys like the University of Alabama President, and the Bama AD, and Saban were able to learn something about VT's fan support there. And frankly, in the conference expansion wars, fan support is the most important thing. The FANS pay the bills. They FANS buy tickets and merchandise and watch on TV. Regrettably, it seems only the ACC has yet to figure this out. The SEC is making more money than anyone, while its schools are located in the poorest states. You know why? Because they have fans.

VT's fans are a difference maker and it's what made us the clear number one choice for the SEC when they wanted to come east back in 2012. Had that not been the case, UVA and/or NC STate would have received invites.

Believe what you want, but when that was going down, it was said Bama was up front and center arguing for VT, and one of the things they pointed to was that 2009 game.

BTW, I lived for a handful of years recently and Atlanta is truly the hub of the SEC machine. When the SECCG is being held, you feel the ripples throughout the entire city. It's a big deal. That game left little doubt VT would be a great Eastern division representative in that game potentially.

It was quite impressive seeing so much orange and maroon around town when Hokie Nation came to the ATL.
